The Costa Rican Social Security Fund (Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social – CCSS) is the public institution in charge of social security in Costa Rica with the goal of providing health and social protection services to the population. Recognizing the positive impact of green building on the environment and the well-being of communities, the fund is leading the construction of green public hospitals in Costa Rica.

Sede de EBAIS de Escobal de Belén, one of CCSS’ green hospitals, is a provider of basic health services to a population of 4,500 individuals in Calle EscoSede de EBAIS de Escobal de Belén has received final EDGE certification from the Green Building Council Costa Rica.bal, San Antonio. The hospital facility offers services ranging from primary care consultations and treatments to laboratory and nursing operations.

The building incorporates occupancy sensors, rainwater harvesting systems and natural ventilation. Solar photovoltaics will provide 25 percent of total energy demand, enough to generate daily energy needs for lighting. As a result, Sede de EBAIS de Escobal de Belén is expected to realize estimated utility cost savings of 584,052 colones (US$1,034) per month.

Reduced window to wall ratio, reflective paint for external walls, insulation of roof and external walls, natural ventilation for corridors, energy-saving lighting systems, occupancy sensors in bathrooms, and solar photovoltaics.

Water

Low-flow faucets in kitchens and bathrooms, single-flush and flush valve for water closets, water-efficient urinals, faucets and landscaping, and a rainwater harvesting system.

Materials

Steel sheets on steel rafters for roof construction, medium weight hollow concrete blocks for internal and external walls, and finished concrete flooring.
