Ghana Infectious Disease Center


The Ghana Infectious Disease Center (GIDC) is a new, 100-bed hospital in Accra, which has been developed in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As the first infectious disease center in Ghana, the GIDC will provide needed healthcare services to the city.

Due to the urgent need for an infectious disease center, the hospital was built in a record time of 100 days. Over 700 square meters of water-efficient landscaping was embedded throughout the hospital to provide as pleasant of an environment as possible for patient recovery.

Resource-efficient design and technologies, such as insulation, energy-saving lighting, and low-flow plumbing fixtures will lower the hospital’s utility costs. The operational savings from the green features enable a simple pay-back period of less than a year. Additional savings will then be rechanneled to provide greater care for patients.

The GIDC was developed by the Ghana COVID-19 Private Sector Fund, a private sector-led initiative committed to providing a prompt response to the hardship and suffering caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The GIDC has received final EDGE certification from thinkstep-SGS.

World Bank Group Office Accra

World Bank Group Office Accra


The World Bank Group Office in Accra symbolizes bringing together the skills and expertise of the World Bank Group under one roof. The four-story office fosters collaboration among employees and serves as a focal point for providing excellent services for IFC’s public and private sector clients in Ghana.

Aligned with the World Bank Group’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the building was designed and constructed to conserve natural resources. The office’s green roof insulates the building, mitigating against the heat island effect of Accra, while the central courtyard and elevated floors allow the building to passively cool itself with natural breezes. The mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems of the building also incorporate resource-efficient technologies, including a black water treatment and recycling system. Reuse of the pre-existing floor slab, roof, walls and windows nearly negated embodied energy in materials.

The World Bank Group Office in Accra was designed by the Co-Arc-OOA-ARUP Joint Venture, who carefully considered ergonomic standards, energy conservation and sustainability criteria in the planning of the building. Michiletti & Co. Ltd began construction in 2010 and completed the project in 2013.

Tema Port – Terminal Three

Tema Port – Terminal Three, located in Tema, Ghana, has received final EDGE certification from thinkstep-SGS.

Tema Port – Terminal Three


The Meridian Port Services (MPS) Tema Port connects Ghana’s shipping industry to the rest of West and Central Africa. Its ambitious expansion will accommodate larger ships and improve the harbor’s facilities and equipment, all while focusing on resource efficiency. The EDGE-certified Terminal Three consists of three separate buildings that include a workshop and maintenance building, offices for administrative purposes and offices for the port’s authorities. MPS designed the buildings to maximize the use of natural daylight while implementing technical solutions to reduce the consumption of energy and water.

MPS is a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, Bolloré Transport & Logistics and APM Terminals. The company is committed to supporting the sustainable growth of Ghana by investing in the country’s infrastructure with a localized approach. In the expansion of the Tema Port, 95 percent of the materials used will be locally procured and the project will provide over 1,000 jobs for Ghanaians. The expansion of the port is also part of the government’s larger goal to improve Ghana’s trade flows and bring greater economic development to the country. Tema Port – Terminal Three has received final EDGE certification from thinkstep-SGS.

Atlantic Tower

Atlantic Tower, located in Accra, Ghana, has received final EDGE certification from thinkstep-SGS.

Atlantic Tower


Situated in the heart of Airport City, Accra’s rapidly growing commercial hub, the 13-story Atlantic Tower is a secure building with world-class features and technologies. Developed by Wahhab Estate Co. Ltd, Atlantic Tower represents the government’s efforts to make Accra a central hub for business in West Africa. The tower offers a prime location for tenants, who have access to nearby malls, hospitals, hotels and other office buildings.

The tower conserves energy with such passive design features as external shading devices and includes energy-efficient air conditioning and occupancy sensors, while water use is expected to be reduced by more than half by using water-efficient fixtures. Construction materials such as aluminum profile cladding for external walls will also reduce embodied energy in materials. These green measures ultimately bring value to the tenants of the Atlantic Tower, who can expect their utility bills to be cut nearly in half compared to the cost of a conventional office building.

Takoradi Mall

Takadori Mall, located in Takadori, Ghana, has received final EDGE certification from thinkstep-SGS.

Takoradi Mall

In a region where electricity bills can be higher than rent, the Takoradi Mall is a transformational project for businesses in Ghana. The mall conserves resources, allowing tenants to focus on improving their profits rather than paying high utility bills. Located in the rapidly growing port city of Takoradi, a key city for Ghana’s emerging oil industry, the Takoradi Mall is situated in a prime location near the airport and at the intersection of the city’s busiest streets. As the first mall to operate in the community, Takoradi is poised to take advantage of the city’s expanding business sector. The mall contains stores, restaurants and a movie theater.

Takoradi conserves natural resources with reflective paint and energy-saving lighting, both of which reduce energy consumption, while features like dual flush water closets conserve water. Construction materials such as solid dense concrete blocks result in a 45% reduction in embodied energy in materials.

The green features of Takoradi Mall cost less than 1% of the total and will generate savings of 25% in utility costs. The developer, RMB Westport, is expected to recoup its investment in less than a year and a half. While businesses may prefer to operate in a green building, many are reluctant to pay additional. However, since building green cost RMB Westport very little, they were able to rent storefronts to tenants for the same price as in a conventional building.

RMB Westport formed in 2008 as a joint venture between Rand Merchant Bank (RMB) and Westport Property Group. Since then, the development and investment firm has invested in the high potential of growing African countries like Ghana. Takoradi Mall has received final EDGE certification from thinkstep-SGS.

MBU at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital

Ghana’s First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, raised funds through The Rebecca Foundation to build the new Mother and Baby Unit (MBU) at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi. The 160-bed EDGE-certified facility houses the maternity, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units of KATH.

Đệ nhất phu nhân Ghana, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, đã quyên góp thông qua Quỹ Rebecca để xây dựng Bệnh viện Bà mẹ và Trẻ em mới (MBU) tại Bệnh viện Đại học Y Komfo Anokye (KATH) ở Kumasi. Bệnh viện 160 giường này gồm các khoa sản, sơ sinh và chăm sóc nhi đặc biệt của KATH. Africa Building Partners (ABP), với lực lượng lao động chủ yếu là người Ghana, xây dựng công trình này.

Lớp vỏ Bệnh viện MBU mới được ngăn cách với nhiệt độ oi nóng bên ngoài, nhờ các cửa sổ nhỏ sử dụng kính cách nhiệt hai lớp. Công nghệ năng lượng mặt trời giúp sản xuất nước nóng và cấp điện cho bệnh viện, với hệ thống chiếu sáng hiệu quả năng lượng và hệ thống điều hòa không khí sử dụng nguồn điện đó hiệu quả hơn. MBU được xây dựng để chịu được động đất, cháy nổ và có khả năng cách nhiệt và cách âm.

Bệnh viện MBU mới sử dụng không khí tươi nhờ lọc khí, có 3 phòng mổ và 9 giường hộ sinh (thay vì 2 như trước đây). Có 30 giường cũi và 15 lồng ấp, nhờ đó các em bé không còn phải nằm chung cũi và lồng ấp như trước đây, và 2 máy thở trẻ em đã được đưa vào sử dụng. Tất cả các phòng sinh được bổ sung bồn rửa tay nhằm ngăn ngừa lây nhiễm chéo.

Tình trạng khó khăn của bệnh viện MBU cũ được Đệ nhất Phu nhân biết đến khi xem phim tài liệu “Next to Die” của Seth Kwame Boateng, hãng tin Joy News. Bộ phim làm dấy lên sự giận dữ trên toàn quốc với thông tin một phần tư số trẻ em tử vong, tương đương mỗi ngày có 7 trẻ em bị chết. Với các bà mẹ tình trạng cũng mong manh như vậy, gần 100 bà mẹ tử vong mỗi năm. Bệnh viện MBU mới chứng minh rằng việc tiết kiệm trong hoạt động có thể dẫn tới môi trường chăm sóc tốt hơn, và cải thiện tình trạng của bệnh nhân.

“Đối với bệnh viện, hiệu quả tài nguyên thể hiện ngay qua số người được cứu sống”, Eric Gené, giám đốc điều hành và người sáng lập của ABP nói. “Chi phí hoạt động thấp hơn có ý nghĩa nhiều hơn việc giảm chi phí xây dựng, dòng tiền được giải phóng để mua thiết bị tốt hơn và sử dụng các chuyên gia y tế giỏi nhất. Điều đó sẽ dẫn đến việc chăm sóc tốt hơn cho bệnh nhân.”

Gené ước tính chi phí phụ trội cho thiết kế xanh của MBU ở mức khoảng 10% đối với hệ thống nước, 20% đối với hệ thống điện, và 10% chi phí vật liệu, hay khoảng 3% trên tổng số. Mức tiết giảm chi phí vận hành nhờ giảm chi phí tiện ích ước tính hơn 23.000$ mỗi tháng. Thời gian hoàn vốn sẽ kết thúc sau 4 tháng hoạt động.
