Residencia Fortaleza is a single-family house located in the city of Mérida Yucatán, Mexico. The project was designed in its entirety to demonstrate that it is possible and necessary to have sustainable housing projects, even using basic construction elements and taking advantage of natural resources to contribute to the environment. The project was designed by Grupo BV and developed by MAFRA Desarrolladora del Sureste, a local developer focused on creating high-quality real estate projects with a view to incorporating wellbeing and sustainability into each of their projects.
To achieve theses commitments to sustainability, state-of-the-art energy and water-saving technologies were incorporated into the design, construction and internal processes of the building. Reflective paint, roof insulation, low-E coated glass, an energy-efficient HVAC system, high-efficiency water boiler, LED lighting and solar photovoltaics all reduce Residencia Fortaleza’s energy use. Water-efficient plumbing fixtures and modern construction technologies further allowed for a reduction in water consumption and energy embodied in materials, yielding a more sustainable project overall.
Residencia Fortaleza has received a Preliminary EDGE Advanced Certificate from Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI)
Reflective paint and insulation for the roof, low-E coated glass, variable refrigerant volume (VRV) cooling system, high efficiency boiler for hot water, energy-saving lighting internal and external spaces, and solar photovoltaics covering 14% of electricity consumption.
Low-flow showerheads, low-flow faucets for kitchen sinks and washbasins, and dual flush for water closets.
Concrete filler slab with polystyrene blocks for floor, concrete filler slab for roof construction, medium weight hollow concrete blocks for external and internal walls, stone slabs and ceramic tiles for flooring, and aluminum window frames.
