The Cube is a commercial complex located in Nairobi, Kenya with a striking full glass façade and cantilevered roof over an open outdoor space.
The project tackled sustainability in the early phases of the project by carrying out building simulation modeling to assess daylighting, glare and ventilation impacts to optimize the building performance.
Given the large amount of glass desired by the designers, extra focus was given to lighting efficiency, high performance glazing and solar PV. Ultra-efficient water fixtures were used to minimize water consumption proving how significant and impact this initiative can make. Beyond EDGE the building will have a large focus on sustainable waste management.
The Cube has been gratned an EDGE Advanced Preliminary Certificate from Green Business Certification Inc. (GBCI).
Predicted Savings of EDGE Certification
Less Embodied Energy in Materials
External Shading Devices, high performance thermal glass, occupancy sensors, solar photovoltaics, Low Energy Lighting
Water efficient showers, toilets, and faucets
Floor and roof concrete filler slab, External and Internal Walls – Stone Blocks – Machine Cut Unpolished, Finished concrete floor
*Part of the energy efficiency percentage may be associated with virtual energy for comfort depending on the presence of heating and cooling systems. Note that virtual energy does not contribute savings to utility bills.
