Kaufland – Hristo Smimenski

Part of the German-owned Schwarz Gruppe, Kaufland has branches of its “hypermarket” chain in Eastern Europe, including in Bulgaria. Kaufland, which has a primary focus on food retail, is among the ten largest companies in Bulgaria, employing 8,500 people.

Kaufland has EDGE certified all of its markets built between 2006-2014, which typically each cost an extra US$100,000 as compared to a conventional retail building. It will take Kaufland on average just two years to recoup the investment, as the monthly energy bill for each store is projected to be reduced by more than US$4,000.

Kaufland is an ambassador of the EDGE brand within the retail space in Bulgaria, with nearly 50 of its stores now certified and plans for more stores to be certified in the future. In tandem with the certification roll-out, key assumptions were adjusted within EDGE as the Bulgarian government implemented tougher regulations. This ensured a tightly defined base case and brought confidence to Kaufland that its stores will perform more efficiently than peer buildings.
